The Brooks Essential Run Jacket II was actually came with the 2013 Akron Marathon entry, but I was unfortunately unable to run it due to another (non-running related) engagement. But I was still able to snag the jacket I paid for!

The jacket itself is a solid running jacket at a great value. It’s recommended temperature range (from Brooks, see below) can easily be extended to much cooler temperatures with the right layers, and I have used the jacket quite a bit in cold temp this very winter.

Feature I like are the elastic wristbands (keep the cold out while stretching over my chunky watch when I need it to), waistband drawstring (again to keep the cold out), and the back vent (to let some of that sweat evaporate out).

I also like the few reflective lines but would really like to see quite a bit more. Reflectivity is definitely under-rated and more outer layers should incorporate more reflectivity into their pieces.

I also like the idea of the “Internal Moisture-Proof Media Pocket” but have failed to use it yet–I generally opt out on music to be more aware of my surroundings.

Overall this jacket has been a great outer layer (over a poly or merino tshirt and then merino long sleeve for this cold winter), protecting me from both cold and wind. At $75 you can’t beat it, as running jackets can easily get twice or more expensive as this.

  1. This is a nice lightweight jacket. It breathes very well and does not restrict movement. It has a vent in the back to help with breathability. It is good on its own with a light under layer for those little bit cooler days or very windy days. It would not be good for cold days by itself because it is very thin, but with a couple of good base layers I was able to wear it on pretty chilly days to help cut out the wind. It also has a few reflective layers, which comes in handy, especially on black clothing. This is a nice, light weight jacket which can be used in many different conditions if paired with the right layers underneath.

  2. This jacket has held up pretty well, as I cycle it through my runs evenly with my other running jackets. Although not insulated, it’s a good shell layer on top of other warmer layers (when needed), as it blocks the wind and moisture well. Although not “waterproof”, it definitely repels rain at least moderately well, as I’ve taken it for at least a couple rainy runs lately and I stayed quite comfy.
