The Brooks PureFlow 2 is a lightweight little pair of trainers that overall have seemed pretty versatile. They are a neutral shoe overall but super slim on support, bordering on minimalist, in my opinion. I have wore then in a lot of types of runs already: 10 mile easy run on pavement and dirt roads, many shorter runs of 3 of less on mix of pavement and uneven grass, a 4 mile trail race including a segment down the middle of a river, hard tempo on paved road, and some grassy hill repeats.
All in all they seem like a pretty good shoes. I have been wearing them day to day for a couple weeks now and using them for everything, as mentioned above. Although the bottoms do seem light on the cushioning side, I feel that they still have plenty of support. It’s not a bad thing if the lesser cushioning helps me focus on softer footfalls and maintaining better form, right? Also, although the shoe seems pretty slim width-wise, my forefoot seems to move around quite a bit in the toe box, so I just have to make sure I keep them tight in the lower parts of the shoe. The curved lace structure (see below) is funky, but doesn’t seem to effect anything.
Overall these shoes definitely have the snappy feel of a flat, but with that in mind, they also feel like they have the structure of flats. So I will keep an eye on how my feet and legs continue to feel as I use the Brooks PureFlow 2 for my day-to-day workouts and report back later with how we all hold up!
***Edit: I actually ended up only running in these shoes for a couple weeks or so. After my initial first impression was pretty good, they eneded up just not being enough shoe for me. My legs and feet never got used to the thinness for day to day running and I basically felt like I was running barefoot. They might have been good for an occasional flat for shorter speed workout or races, but over just didn’t work out for me.
