These Honey Stinger Energy Chews are pretty delicious. They are basically small, round fruit snacks.

I ate half a pack at two different points during the same long run. I ate the first half while stopped for a drink break, rolled them up as closed as possible, stuffed them back into my running belt, then ate the 2nd half while on the go a few miles later. They’re light enough that I didn’t need to drink immediately after, but it’s all personal preference.

In a different workout, I ate 4 pieces prior to a one-mile warm up jog, then ate one in between each mile of a 5×1 mile speedwork with one minute (time to eat a fruit snack and have a quick swallow of water!) rest in between. They also sat well during this high-intensity workout, which was fantastic.

My biggest concern with packages like these is opening them while on the run when my hands are all sweaty and slippery. I pre-tore part of the package just slightly before I even left for the run so it wouldn’t give me trouble later on. This worked out well.

I like fruit snacks such as these for longer runs because they feel like they have a little more substance and may stay with me a little longer.

  1. These are very delicious. I have had almost all of the flavors and I think they are all good. My favorite flavor is the pink lemonade and my least favorite flavor is cherry blossom (it kind of tastes like cough syrup). I eat these during a lot of my long runs. I have not had a problem opening them during runs. Most of the packages have a ‘tear’ spot, and the ones that don’t I can still open easily. I rip them down from the top instead of trying to rip them open horizontally. They are small pieces, which make them easier to chew and they dissolve pretty quickly so you only have to chew each one a couple of times. I find them very handy during long runs.
