The Smartwool PHD Run Shorts are a longer polyester running short with a primarily liner. They feel light and comfortable and I like them a lot so far. They are thin, and although I like to claim I’m a shortest-short kinda-guy, the slightly longer ones are definitely good (and preferred) for longer runs. I also dig the small, zippered key pocket smack dab in the middle of the back side.

Again, they are definitely comfortable. The wool liner seems supportive enough that I don’t think I need additional undies, although I’m not sure if this is socially acceptable or not (but does that matter?). They’ve been great for short and long, through temps between 40’s-60’s. I’m interested how they’ll feel through the hot and humid summer months.  I will surely add more input when I’ve experiences more conditions.

Overall, Smartwool comes through again with another great product.

Seamless knit liner, knit-in ventilation zones, lightweight outer short.

Outer Short – 100% Recycled Polyester; Liner – 79% Merino Wool, 18% Nylon, 3% Elastane

  1. When I heard about smartwool shorts, my first thought was that they would be kinda heavy feeling and maybe very warm. But surprisingly these are very light shorts. I can barely tell I have them on when I am running and they are long enough that they cover my thighs completely so my thighs do not rub together at all. They also have a little zip pocket in the back that can hold a key or two. Its definitely not big enough for a phone. The shorts also have an elastic band to adjust the waist. The inside of the waist is also softer than the outer material so it is nice and comfortable on the skin. Overall, I am very happy with these shorts, they are a bit pricy. But you get what you pay for. A nice light short, with a small pocket, and you can wear them multiple times and they don’t stink.
