Location: Detroit, MI

Time of Year: October

Distance options: Half-Marathon (13.1 miles), Full Marathon (26.2 miles), and possibly a team marathon relay

Year(s) completed: 2007 (full marathon)

I ran this race is 2007 and I think it’s been pretty much the same since.  The course itself starts off downtown, goes across the Ambassador Bridge to Canada, and comes back through the Tunnel.  It then goes through downtown some more, wanders northeast, then does a loop on Belle Isle before going back downtown to finish.

Overall I wasn’t too impressed.  It was definitely cool (but somewhat difficult because of the bridge incline and tunnel stuffiness) to run over to Canada and back.  However, the expo at the time was lacking, as was the later stages of the course.  The last 10 miles were pretty desolate, with very little crowd support and nothing too exciting to look at.

The last couple of years the participant numbers seemed to have suffered, perhaps with Grand Rapids and Chicago Marathons both being on the same weekend or very close to it.
