These Smartwool Men’s PhD Wind Boxer Brief are just about what I’ve been looking for as far as a wind-shielding pair of undies for winter running. Wind shielding is surprisingly hard to come by. These are a merino wool/poly blend that is light, comfy, and breathable. There is also a thin polyester layer that is the “wind panel”.

They are versatile enough to definitely wear for everyday use, but that alone would be wasting their heartiness. I even slept in them one night, and although they worked pretty well, they were just *slightly* too cozy (probably the wind panel?) for sleepwear. I’ve ran in them twice–once actually over a pair of poly briefs, then tights over that. The second time just by themselves with a thin pair of running tights over. Both worked well, but the temps haven’t quite fallen enough for me to fully vouch for them–just low 30’s (F) at the lowest so far. I’m sure winter will eventually give me some nastier conditions for me to really test them.

Overall these are a righteous pair of boxers, albeit a bit pricey for a pair of boxers. However, if they last as long as all my other Smartwool gear, as well as giving the me wind protection for my boys that I’ve been searching for, they will definitely prove to be worth it.

Wind Panel: 100% Polyester; Body: 56% Merino Wool, 44% Polyester; Mesh: 54% Merino Wool, 46% Polyester
