The Runner’s High Race Primer is a pre-race energizer and “endurance performance enhancer”. It contains a few ingredients aimed to get you going, namely caffeine, taurine, and niacin.

I was advised to only use this for “key workouts or races”, as I can quickly become tolerant to the effects. I tried a scoop before a race and two hard workouts.

Now, I have a pretty low tolerance to caffeine, so I definitely felt the caffeine, perhaps too much–I was close to jittery almost with palpitations. I’m not sure if it was just a bad coincidence, but 2 of the 3 times I got a slight stomach cramp within two miles, but then went away.

The flavor was pretty bad, sort of like crushed up kids’ vitamins. Overall the mix also seemed kind of expensive.

All in all, I’m not sure if there is any real [legal, moral, etc] “endurance performance enhancer”. And if there was, I’m not sure whether I want to use it anyway. I am interested in staying hydrated and properly fueled, but this product tasted bad and made me feel wonky. It definitely wasn’t for me.
