Running the Edge (full name Running the Edge: Discovering the Secrets to Better Running a Better Life), is an interesting mixture of self-help strategies for runners/everybody with personal stories from the authors (both elite runners and former teammates at Colorado) and quotes or short bits of advice from other elite runners.

It seems to have an ultimate goal of having the reader take a realistic look at all aspects of their own life, including being a runner, with the outcome to improve all of these aspects in order to become what the authors deem a “distance maven”.

In all honestly, it is a little cheesy.  But if you’re willing to put that aside, it really does offer some useful tools and strategies for evaluating and taking a look at oneself on all levels.

However, my favorite parts are all the personal stories from both of the authors, from their time together as teammates at Colorado, to Goucher’s trials as a professional athlete, to Catalano’s wisdom from being a distance coach to high-schoolers.

Whether you take the self-evaluation portions seriously or not (I suggest you give it an honest try, everyone always has room for improvement), this book seems worth a read.
